LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF...

Hi, I’m Megan LaCroix, an award-winning author of fantasy stories for young adults and adults, as well as a dedicated developmental editor. Over the past decade, I’ve worked with manuscripts at every stage of development, offering guidance to ensure they reach their fullest potential. My expertise includes:
-
Enhancing Character Agency: I’ll help you create characters who drive the story forward with purposeful actions and decisions that resonate with readers.
-
Plot Structuring: From building solid foundations to refining intricate storylines, I specialize in crafting plots that are engaging, well-paced, and cohesive.
-
Deepening POV: Whether you’re aiming for a more intimate connection with your protagonist or exploring complex narrative voices, I’ll provide insights on how and where to enrich your point of view.
-
Streamlining Your Story: I excel at identifying excess scenes, words, or dialogue that may weigh down your narrative. While I won't make the cuts for you, I'll pinpoint exactly where you can trim to enhance pacing and achieve maximum impact.
WHAT IS DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING?
Unlike line editing or proofreading, developmental editing is focused on big-picture revisions vs. sentence-level corrections. Developmental edits will look at the overall structure of your manuscript, addressing key elements such as:
-
Plot: Is your story’s foundation strong, with a clear arc and satisfying resolution? Are there gaps, inconsistencies, or missed opportunities to heighten tension and intrigue?
-
Pacing: Does your narrative balance moments of action and introspection? Are there areas that feel rushed or others that drag?
-
Character Development: Are your characters well-rounded, with clear agency, compelling goals, stakes, and motivations? Do their actions drive the story in meaningful ways?
-
Narrative Flow: Does your story transition smoothly between scenes and chapters? Is the progression logical and engaging for the reader?

THREE WAYS TO KNOW IF YOU'RE READY FOR AN EDITOR
1. Do you have a completed draft?
Having a completed draft is a must for a developmental edit. An editor cannot evaluate big-picture elements (like overall pacing, character arcs, etc.) if they only have partial manuscript to go by. Make sure your story is complete before inquiring.
2. What shape is your manuscript in?
Hiring a developmental editor is a big investment, so it’s best to take some time to polish your manuscript beforehand to get the most value. For instance, if you’re thinking about a developmental edit, but you already know certain sections need to be cut from your manuscript, go ahead and make those changes yourself. Since full manuscript edits are priced per word, trimming unnecessary content can help reduce costs and save on your editor's turnaround time.
3. Are you ready to tackle the work?
Taking on a developmental edit isn’t easy. First off, you’re going to receive extensive feedback, often focused on the parts of your story that need improvement. This can feel dejecting and daunting, but developmental revisions are a crucial step in any author’s publishing journey. Ask yourself if you’re ready for this challenge—because that’s exactly what it is—an enormous challenge. Revisions may involve significant changes, but they ultimately lead to a stronger, much more polished manuscript.
